The Deck

Created by artist Kary Hess, the SparkTarot® was born in a cycle of seasons: the cards painted in watercolor over nine months beginning in spring 2019, the guidebook written that fall, and the deck released into the world in February 2020 (right when people needed it most!). This is a deck that honors time, transformation, and the spark that lives in us all.

“I created the SparkTarot® Deck and Guidebook to both bring Tarot into the contemporary world and return it to its roots. I changed some of the names of the cards to coincide more fully with ancient archetypes that resonate in our bones. The new names help readings feel easier and more authentic to today. In my deck, the “Swords” suit is called Serpents—the ancient symbol for spiritual consciousness and intellect—and the “Pentacles” (or “Coins”) suit has become Stones, a symbol for groundedness.” —Kary Hess
