How to Celebrate the Season
I’m mostly Swedish by heritage but we don’t have a huge Alla Helgons Dag celebration in our town ;) What we do have in our community is a wonderful El Día de los Muertos celebration.
For 25 years, thanks to the initial efforts of Abraham Solar and Margie Helm, Petaluma has celebrated this Mexican ancestor holiday with weeks of community celebrations, community altars, and large scale festivities including a candlelight walk through the town. I was inspired all those years ago to create a home altar and have had one every year since.
I love putting up the photos every year and seeing our departed family and friends again. Sometimes there are new people to add and they take center stage that year. It feels good to remember our lineage regularly. I always do at least one Tarot reading with this spread at this time of year to learn what the ancestors may have to say right now. The seasonal year is composed of many different times, and there are good times to do certain things. This is a time to take a little space to remember those who have gone before us, to discover and acknowledge what they have passed down to us.
Some of these things are useful and some are not. You don’t have to keep anything that isn’t helping you and they wouldn’t want you to. The spread can help you differentiate what is theirs and what can be yours.
