Happy Valentine’s Day!
Valentine’s Day—it’s a time of reveling in the fertility of springtime, with your lover and with love itself. But make no mistake, you don’t need a lover to enjoy this sumptuous day. Across cultures, Spring festivals are an integral part of connecting with the evolution of the natural world.
What we know as Valentine’s Day likely originated from the Roman Spring festival of Lupercalia. This festival celebrated spring with fertility rites—including pairing off women and men by lottery!
Of course, when the Pope got involved in the 5th century, he replaced the licentious festival with St. Valentine’s Day, much more proper!
So whether or not you have a lover (or many lovers!) make plans to celebrate spring this week with friends and nature. Take a walk, go camping, watch the sunrise or sunset, meet friends for brunch, you get the idea.
