Meet the Tarot Artists

Usher Gallery, 1 Petaluma Boulevard North, PetalumaLocal Petaluma Tarot Artists Kary Hess and Isabel Hayes, will be at Usher Gallery from 2-4pm to share about their artisan-made Tarot decks. Go behind the scenes with the artists and learn what inspired these beautiful decks, and get a little early holiday shopping done at the gallery!
Place-Based Tarot
The SparkTarot®deck was inspired directly out of the Marin and Sonoma landscape, where I have lived almost all of my life.
When I created my deck, the first card I painted was the Queen of Cups. The image of a woman holding a golden cup at the ocean melding into the landscape evokes the feeling we have when a place becomes part of us and we part of it.
The scene was based on Dillon Beach, a stunning Northern California beach landscape that I regularly visit over the years.
The question of how people, places and things make us who we are is at the core of my creative process. I believe that everything is animate and infused with energy that is ready and waiting to be in relationship with us.
I also believe that place and things play transcendent roles that are more influential in our lives than we might initially imagine and that we are ultimately made of these relationships.
In an object-based culture that uses an object-based language, it is now more important than ever to remember that life is not made up of “resources” for us to use, but that we are in relationship with everything. Through my work, including the SparkTarot®, I show and explore those living relationships.
